Description
This black lacquered covered bowl is an interesting estate find. My research indicates that it was probably made in the early 1970's. This conclusion is drawn from the tattered red paper label on the bottom which reads "Peoples Republic of China". After normalization of relations with the United States in 1978, the designation was changed to "Made in China". The bowl is made of a very strong composite material, probably paper and glue which was then covered with many coats of lacquer and then hand decorated with an intricate floral pattern. It is approximately 6-1/2" long and 5-1/2" at its widest point. The height of the closed bowl is approximately 5". The bowl is clean and in excellent condition. The only obvious defect is a small chip on the edge of the top half which is visible in photo #4.The hearty melon shape is unusual and a marked difference from various Asian lacquered boxes on the market. It would be a great addition to any collection of Asian artifacts or a thoughtful gift for a special friend.
Thank you for your consideration.
