    Description

8" Yamatoku Chinese genre scene decorated plate Courtiers outside home Japan
This vintage Japanese marked glaze decorated plate follows in the tradition of Chinese pottery of depicting genre scenes featuring a man and woman attended by a servant or relative, enjoying a garden outside their home, rendered in a highly calligraphic drawing style with a variety of colors, including orange and teal, in the distance a waterfall appears behind the house cascading off a stylized mountain ridge. Around its rim is a border of peonies, chrysanthemum, lotus and butterflies rendered in pink, blue, yellow, green and copper glazes.
The back of the plate features two cartouches, one impressed into the clay featuring Japanese katakana characters spelling out Yamatoku (Mountain Virtue), and Arita manufacture's name stamp and a hand painted red cartouche with Kanji characters, which is likely the decorator's signature.
